A four year old “ASPIN” with “pyometra”

A four year old “ASPIN” was presented for spaying with distended abdomen, anorexic and suspectedly pregnant according to the owner… upon opening of the abdomen a pus filled uterus was retracted thru a two inches incision revealed a classical case of close “pyometra”

PYOMETRA-is an infection of the womb (uterus)common condition in older dogs that have not been spayed

CAUSE:
-Infection associated with failed pregnancy
-Copulation with infected male
-Hormonal changes

SIGNS:
-Licking of her behind
-Pale color
-Inappetence
-Pus discharge (in case of open pyometra)
-Distended abdomen
-Vomitting
-Death due to septic shock

TREATMENT:
Surgical removal of the uterus
Hormonal treatment
